ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS APPOINT DEBRA MARVEL OF BELLEVILLE AS DEPUTY CLERK OF THE BOARD
(Newark, NJ) – The Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders unanimously approved a Resolution to appoint Debra Marvel as Deputy Clerk of the Freeholder Board during its Wednesday, August 13, 2008, meeting held at the Hall of Records. Ms. Marvel was then sworn-in as Deputy Clerk during a ceremony held the following day, Thursday, August 14, 2008. The oath of office was administered by Essex County Clerk, Christopher J. Durkin.
Ms. Marvel is a career County employee with nearly 30 years of service. She began her career with the County as a Clerk Transcriber in the Court’s Probation Department in 1979 before moving to the Administrative Offices of the Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1981, where she has continued to work ever since. Over the ensuing 27 years, Ms. Marvel rose through the ranks to become the Supervising Clerk/Human Resources Liaison and then Administrative Secretary/Human Resources Liaison in 2006, before her appointment as Deputy Clerk. She is currently pursuing her B.A. in Political Science from Montclair State University.
As Deputy Clerk, Ms. Marvel will provide administrative assistance to the Freeholder Clerk in the management of the office, preparation of meeting agendas, certification of all documents, handling of correspondence on behalf of the Board, and the provision of secretarial services to the nine members of the Freeholder Board, among many other responsibilities.
"We couldn’t be more delighted to appoint a career employee like Debbie to this position," said Freeholder President Blonnie Watson. "With her wealth of experience and unfailing professionalism, we know we’ll be in good hands."
"Debbie has been associated with the Freeholder Board longer than anyone else around, and has trained everyone who currently works for us," said Freeholder Vice President Ralph Caputo. "Debbie was the logical choice, and we are very pleased and lucky to be able to promote such a deserving and committed member of our staff to this position."
For her part, Ms. Marvel expressed here sincere appreciation to the entire Board for their vote of confidence, and offered a special "thanks" to Freeholder President Watson and Freeholder Vice President Caputo, stating, "I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Freeholder President and Vice President for recommending me for this appointment, as well as for all your support and encouragement."
Ms. Marvel resides in Belleville with her husband, Tom, a U. S. Postal Service employee, and their daughter, Britney, a sophomore at William Paterson University.
