JANINE G. BAUER was appointed to fill a vacancy as the District 3 Freeholder in March of 2018.  She currently resides in South Orange and is a graduate of Syracuse University and Rutgers Law School, cum laude.  Freeholder Bauer is a trial lawyer and partner at the firm of Szaferman Lakind P.C. in Lawrenceville, New Jersey practicing for 34 years. In 2017, she was elected as a member of the Democratic State Committee and has been the chair of the South Orange Democratic Committee since 2012.  She served on Governor Philip Murphy’s advisory group on transit and transportation matters and the transportation transition committee for his campaign. Freeholder Bauer also served as a South Orange municipal trustee for four years from 2009 through 2013. From 1993 until 2003, Freeholder Bauer was the Executive Director of the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a non-profit organization in the Tri-State region advocating for more investment in transit and safer pedestrian and bicycling, as well as, major capital projects such as the Gateway rail tunnel to New York City, new bridges and traffic demand management measures including congestion pricing. She also has represented AARP in several major utility rate cases, advocating for lower rates while ensuring reliable gas and electric service. Freeholder Bauer has a long history of community service, serving as a director on several boards and committees such as the Highlands Coalition and the Delaware Riverkeeper Network. She has taught historic preservation classes at Drew University, Kean University and Rutgers University, and environmental law and policy as an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University. She is married with two children.
