(Newark, NJ) – Former Bloomfield Councilman Bernard Hamilton was honored by the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders for his 12 years on the Bloomfield Municipal Council during its Wednesday, February 19, 2014, meeting held at the Hall of Records.  The Board’s commendation was sponsored and presented by District 5 Freeholder Brendan W. “One of the most enjoyable responsibilities I have as a freeholder is to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of Essex County residents”, said Freeholder Gill, “and tonight is one of those occasions, because I have the honor of acknowledging the outstanding service of Bernard Hamilton, who recently completed his 12-year tenure on the Bloomfield Municipal Council.”

Gill recounted that Councilman Hamilton began the first of his four consecutive 3-year terms in 2002, and commented that he was also the first African-American to be elected to town-wide office, “which is especially deserving of mention as we celebrate February as African-American History Month.”

During his time on the Council, Hamilton served as the Council’s liaison to the Bloomfield Board of Education, Planning Board, Recycling Committee, Parking Authority, Board of Health, Bloomfield Center Alliance and WBMA Channel 35.  He was also a member of the Bloomfield Finance Committee and Redevelopment Authority, Second River Association, Third River Association and NJSLM Gang Awareness Task Force.

Councilman Hamilton thanked Freeholder Gill and the entire Freeholder Board for acknowledging his service.  “I also want to thank the residents of Bloomfield for giving me the opportunity to serve them as their Councilman”, said Hamilton, “and I want you to know that I look forward to serving the Township in any way I can as I move forward, even if it’s only to offer my advice or insights.”

“Councilman, I want to thank you for helping me in my professional career and for the friendship that has meant so much to me”, said Gill.  “I also want you to know that I am fully aware of the fact I wouldn’t be standing here today without the support and guidance of elected officials like you.”

Bernard Hamilton is currently employed as Vice President of the Treasury Trading Operations Unit at Mizuho Bank in Jersey City, and is the founder and principal owner of Hamilton Consulting Associates, LLC.

Freeholder Gill is currently serving his first term as the Freeholder for District 5, which includes the municipalities of Belleville, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Montclair and Nutley.
