ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS MOURN THE PASSING
OF PHILIP THIGPEN, A DEAR FRIEND AND PUBLIC SERVANT

(Newark, NJ) – The Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders expresses its sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Philip Thigpen, who passed away yesterday, Tuesday, October 29, 2013.

Mr. Thigpen was serving as the Essex County Register of Deeds & Mortgages and Chairman of the Essex County Democratic Party at the time of his passing.  Previously, he served on the East Orange City Council and briefly as a member of the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, as well as in other positions in service to the public.

“Mr. Thigpen was truly an intelligent, fair and compassionate man”, said Freeholder President Blonnie Watson.  “He was a gentleman, always, which says so much about his character”, she continued, “because it certainly isn’t easy to maintain that demeanor in the rough and tumble world of Essex County politics…but somehow he did.  His lifetime of public service establishes a standard I doubt anyone will ever equal again.”

“Chairman Thigpen was a wonderful man, and a wonderful friend”, said Freeholder Vice President Patricia Sebold.  “I will miss him and the calming effect he had in the most difficult of circumstances so very much, as will everyone here at the Hall of Records, throughout the county, and across the state.”
