(Newark, NJ) – During its Wednesday, June 13th, meeting held at the Hall of Records, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Glen Ridge High School Girls Lacrosse Team for having won the 2012 Group I State Championship.  Freeholder Brendan Gill of Montclair sponsored and presented the Board’s Commendation to members of the team who were accompanied by Head Coach Beth Larkin, Assistant Coach Erica Spatz and Glen Ridge High School Director of Athletics, Tim Liddy.

The Ridgers won their second consecutive state championship by defeating The Pingry School of Martinsville, 16-11, on May 31st in Robbinsville, New Jersey, after first defeating North Warre Regional High School (20-2), Glen Rock High School (18-4), Kent Place School of Summit (19-15) and then Mountain Lakes High School (13-6) to win the North Group I Sectional Championship.

Leading up to State Tournament play, the Team completed undefeated 6-0 seasons in both the Super Essex Conference and the North Jersey Interscholastic Girls Lacrosse League, thereby capturing the American Division and the Stars and Stripes North Division Championships, respectively; they also won the 2012 Essex County Tournament by defeating West Essex Regional High School, 17-7, on May 12th.

The Team completed its championship season with an overall record of 21-4, and ranked as the #4 girls lacrosse team in New Jersey by The Star-Ledger.

Freeholder Gill, who began his first term as the District 5 freeholder in January representing Glen Ridge, remarked that this was the first presentation he has made since taking office.  “It really is a pleasure for me to make this presentation tonight, and to congratulate the team for its second straight state championship.  You’ve accomplished great things both on the field and in the classroom, and I want you to know that your families, your school, your community and the Essex County Board of Freeholders are very proud of you.  I hope you keep up the good work, and I look forward to making this same presentation to you again next year when you celebrate your third straight state championship!”
