Freeholder Bobadilla opened the program by saying, “We’re here today because the RTA Patriots won the Charter League Championship, the first championship in school history, and that says a lot!”, which elicited a roar from the players, coaches and parents in the audience.  “You managed to complement your outstanding athletics with outstanding academics, and that’s just great.”  Bobadilla also complimented the parents for all their time, effort and sacrifices to help their children succeed.

The Robert Treat Academy (RTA) Girls Basketball Team has been a member of the Charter School Athletic League for the last five years, which is comprised of thirteen charter schools from across northern New Jersey.

This year, the team, known as the Patriots, became the first team in RTA history to win the league championship.  The team first captured the league’s East Division championship before going on to meet the West Division champions, St. Phillips Academy of Newark, in the exciting, nail-biter of a championship game they won, 20-18, finishing their season with an outstanding overall record of 9-1.

The team was comprised of the following players: 8th Graders Tiana Barkley, Ciara Cohen, Alana Garcia, Emiliana Geronimo, Allya Jaquez, Katherine Ramos, Monica Soto and Lamara White; and 7th Graders A’mya Braswell, Amaya Romero and Elisha Vazquez.  The Practice Squad was comprised of: 8th Grader Ashley Medina; 7th Graders Veronica Blair, Nadine Ferrera and Ashley Figueroa; and 6th Graders Emily Acosta, Trinity Lance and Erisdania Martinez.

The team was coached by Head Coach Dawn Geronimo and Assistant Coach Zach Ontell, and also received administrative support from Principal Theresa Adubato, Vice Principal Paul Parada, and RTA’s founder, Stephen N. Adubato.

The team was accompanied by their Head Coach, Dawn Geronimo, Assistant Coach Zach Ontell and Vice Principal Paul Parada, as well as a contingent of parents.  Parada commented, “I am extremely proud of these young ladies because of their championship, but also because they are good students, good people and good citizens”, and Head Coach Geronimo added that she was so pleased the Board was honoring the girls because, “they have really worked hard in the classroom and in the gym, and I am very happy to be a part of this.”

Freeholder Bobadilla closed the program by congratulating the entire team for their wonderful season, reminding the graduating 8th graders that, “you have a lot more achievements ahead of you”, and encouraging the returning players to “keep up the good work”.
