(Newark, NJ) – During its Wednesday, February 6, 2013, meeting at the Hall of Records, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Glen Ridge High School Girls Soccer Team for winning the 2012 Group 1 State Championship, as well as the team’s Head Coach, Oscar Viteri, for being named the 2012 New Jersey Girls Soccer “Coach of the Year” by The Star-Ledger.  The Board’s commendations were sponsored and presented to the team and their coach by District 5 Freeholder Brendan W. Gill of Montclair.

Freeholder Gill opened the program by saying how pleased he was “to recognize the accomplishments of Glen Ridge High School athletes, as well as their coach”, commenting on the success of many Ridger teams in the last few years that have won state championships and were also honored by the Freeholder Board.  Introducing Head Coach Oscar Viteri, Freeholder Gill said, “Coach, this really has been an unbelievable year for girls soccer at Glen Ridge High School… the team wins the Group 1 State championship, and you are named the New Jersey Girls Soccer Coach of the Year.  Congratulations!”

The 2012 Glen Ridge High School Girls Soccer Team won the 2012 Group 1 State Championship by defeating Shore Regional High School, 2-0, on Sunday, December 2nd, at the College of New Jersey in Ewing.  In State Tournament competition the Ridgers first defeated Jonathan Dayton High School (7-0), New Providence High School (2-1), and then Belvidere High School (1-0) to earn the North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 Sectional Championship for the first time since 2007, before going on to defeat Waldwick High School (2-1) and then Shore Regional in the Group 1 State
Championship game.  The team concluded its State Championship Season, the second in school history (the first was in 2001), with an outstanding overall record of 15 victories, 5 losses and 2 draws.

The team earned a final ranking by The Star-Ledger as the #1 Group 1 team in New Jersey and the #3 team in Essex County, and also holds the distinction of being the only Group 1 team in the state to defeat a team ranked in The Star-Ledger’s Top 20 this year.

Coached by Head Coach Oscar Viteri, and Assistant Coaches Lindsey Deptula and Brian Ianni, the team was comprised of the following players: seniors Maeliosa Barstow, Natasha Dombrowski, Claire Malone (Captain), Megan MacDonald (Captain), Paige Smith (Captain) and Caroline Thiele; juniors Victoria Finlay, Kristen Liu, Ashley Kulik, Emily Marhan, Eileen McAuley, Miran Schultz and Caroline Smith; sophomores Shannon Marhan, Ryann McCann, Eliza Parrinello, Sam Sikkerbol and Elizabeth Waugh; and freshmen Ryanne Ege, Emily Gill and Tomison Kennedy.

Oscar Viteri, the New Jersey Girls Soccer “Coach of the Year”, has been the Glen Ridge Head Coach since 2001, and during his tenure has led the program to three North 2, Group 1 Sectional titles (2001, 2007, 2012), two Group 1 State championships (2001, 2012), to the Group 1 Championship game in 2007, and to an outstanding overall record of 168-69-12.

Coach Viteri graduated from Livingston H.S. and earned his B.A. in Physical Education and Health from Kean College, where he played Division 3 soccer for four years.  He began his teaching career in 1992 and joined the Newark Public Schools in 2000 at Abington Avenue School, where he still teaches today.  He began his coaching career as the JV Boys Soccer Coach at Morristown H.S. before moving on to Morris Hills H.S., Mt. St. Dominic Academy and Rutgers-Newark, before joining the Ridgers in 2001.  During his many years of coaching, Coach Viteri has compiled an enviable record of 231-122-18, distinguishing him as one of the most respected and successful coaches in the State of New Jersey.
