ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS
HONOR THE STATE CHAMPION GLEN RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL
GIRLS TENNIS & SOCCER TEAMS

(Newark, NJ) – During its Wednesday, January 15, 2014, meeting at the Hall of Records, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Glen Ridge H. S. Girls Tennis and Soccer teams for winning their respective Group 1 State Championships.  The presentations were sponsored and presented by District 5 Freeholder Brendan Gill of Montclair.

“Due to the tremendous success of so many Glen Ridge teams in recent years”, said Freeholder Gill”, “we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Athletic Director Tim Liddy and many of the student athletes, and it’s been a lot of fun”, said Freeholders Gill.  “Tonight we have the pleasure of celebrating two more teams, both of whom are Group 1 state champions… the girls’ tennis and soccer teams!”

Glen Ridge Athletic Director Tim Liddy thanked the freeholders for inviting the teams to the Hall of Records and also spoke glowingly about the tremendous seasons of both teams.  “They were a joy to watch throughout the year, and especially when they performed so well in the state tournament”, said Liddy.  “I have to say, though, that I wasn’t surprised by their success, because I saw their determination all year long, and I also credit their coaches for instilling that in them.”
The Tennis Team won its championship when it defeated Pennsville H.S., 4-1, on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Mercer County Park in West Windsor. 

In the state tournament the Lady Ridgers first defeated Roselle Park H.S. (5-0) and then New Providence H.S. (5-0) to win their fifth consecutive North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 Sectional Championship, before defeating Metuchen H.S. (5-0) and then Pennsville H.S. in the championship match, earning the right to participate in the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions.

The team concluded its state championship season, only the second in school history, with an overall record of 18-5, and earned a final ranking by The Star-Ledger as the #1 Group 1 team in New Jersey and the #5 team in Essex County.  Further, the newspaper named Head Coach Lisbeth Crouse as the Essex County “Coach of the Year” and recognized four players: Maddie Baione and Erin Carr were both named to the 1st Team All-Group 1 and 2nd Team All-Essex County; Kendall Smith was named to the 1st Team All-Group 1; and Paige Moriarty was named to the 3rd Team All-Group 1.

The Tennis Team was comprised of: seniors Eva Buggy, Erin Carr, Paige Moriarity, Tessa Powell, Kendall Smith and Julia Tolmachyov; juniors Maddie Baione and Katie Frohling; and freshmen Chase Moriarity (Manager) and Charlotte Sagges.  The team was coached by Head Coach Lisbeth Crouse and Assistant Coach Caitlin Reilly. 

 “We had a wonderful season”, said Head Coach Lisabeth Crouse.  “We have such hard-working girls who were determined to get back to the finals, and it was just amazing to watch them win the championship match against Pennsville, especially since we lost to them in the finals last year.  It was just fantastic.”

The Soccer Team won a share of the Group 1 State Co-Championship in a thrilling double-overtime tie with Shore Regional H.S., 1-1, on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at The College of New Jersey in Ewing.

In the state tournament, the team first defeated Secaucus H.S. (8-0), Jonathan Dayton Regional H.S. (4-0) and then New Providence H.S. (1-0) to earn the North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 Sectional Championship for the second consecutive year and third time since 2007, before going on to defeat New Milford H.S. (2-1) in double overtime, and then tie Shore Regional in the championship game.

The team concluded its second straight state championship season, the third in school history, with a 15-7-2 record and earned final rankings by The Star-Ledger as the #1 Group 1 team in the state and the #3 team in Essex County.  Eight individual players were also recognized by the newspaper: Victoria Finlay was named to the 1st Team All-Group 1 and 2nd Team All-Essex County; Tomison Kennedy was named to the 1st Team All-Group 1 and 1st Team All-Essex County; Caroline Smith was named to the 1st Team All-Group 1 and 2nd Team All-Essex County; Ryanne Ege was named to the 1st Team All-Group 1; Galen Lew was named to the 2nd Team All-Group 1 and 3rd Team All-Essex County; Katie Liu was named to the 2nd Team All-Group 1 and 3rd Team All-Essex County; Emily Marhan was named to the 3rd Team All-Group 1; and Colleen Grady was named to the 3rd Team All-Essex County.

The Soccer Team was comprised of: seniors Victoria Finlay, Ashley Kulik, Kristen Liu, Emily Marhan and Caroline Smith; juniors Shannon Marhan, Eliza Parrinello and Samantha Sikkerbol; sophomores Ryanne Ege, Emily Gill and Tomison Kennedy; and freshmen Merritt Davie, Colleen Grady, Taylor Kulik, Galen Lew, Kathryn Liu, Kelly Ann Livingstone, Meghan Marhan and Olivia Schwern.  The team was coached by Head Coach Oscar Viteri and Assistant Coaches Lindsey Deptula and Brian Ianni.

“I’m extremely proud of the girls”, said Head Coach Oscar Viteri.  “They are back-to-back state champions, and it’s a great feeling.  As a coach, you direct your players, but the players do all the work on the field, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Freeholder Gill concluded the presentations by thanking all the athletes’ parents for supporting their children, and congratulated the players for their success, “because it’s well earned, and well deserved.”
