“Tonight we are here to honor an outstanding young woman from Maplewood who just graduated from Columbia High School after a stellar career as a state champion track & field athlete, and her name is Emilie Cowan”, said Freeholder Richardson.  “And this past June, at the Outdoor Track Meet of Champions, she capped-off her amazing career by winning the State Championship in the 400 Meters and receiving 1st Team All-State honors.  Congratulations, Emilie!

Richardson further noted the outstanding 2015 Spring Season Emilie enjoyed even before winning her state title at the Meet of Champions: she won the 400 Meters and 800 Meters at the Group 4 Sectional Championships; the 100 Meters, 200 Meters, 400 Meters and 800 Meters at the Essex County Championships; the 200 Meters, 400 Meters and 800 Meters at the Super Essex Conference Championships; and was a member of Columbia’s 4x100 and 4x200 Meter Relay Teams that won championships at the Essex County Relays.

“Emilie has enjoyed great success throughout her years at Columbia”, said Richardson, “including conference, county and state championships, as well as all-conference, all-county and all-state honors, both individually and as a team member.”  Remarking that she will continue her academic and track careers on a full scholarship to the University of Massachusetts, he added, “Emilie, you are an outstanding athlete and an outstanding young woman.  We wish you all the best at UMass, and look forward to hearing about your accomplishments there both in the classroom and on the track.”

“This is by far the biggest award I’ve ever received in my entire life”, said Cowan, “and I am really, really proud of it.  Thank you, this means so much to me.”

Freeholder Richardson is serving his first term as the Board’s District 2 Freeholder where he represents Irvington, Maplewood and parts of Newark’s South and Central Wards.
