“Last year we welcomed Charlotte to the Hall of Records in Newark when she won the 2014 state championship”, said Freeholder Vice President Brendan Gill of Montclair, “and tonight we have the honor of welcoming her back, this time as a two-time state champion in the 100-yard breast stroke.”  He added, “Last year, she became the first female swimmer from Montclair to win a state championship since 1987, and now she’s done it again!  Congratulations!”

Speaking on behalf of herself and Freeholder President Britnee Timberlake, who was an accomplished high school swimmer herself, Freeholder Cynthia Toro said, “Charlotte, we are so proud of you, your accomplishments, and for being the outstanding young women you are.  And I might as well say it now… we look forward to your return next year when we celebrate your third straight state championship!”

“Thank you to the Essex County Freeholders, and my coach, Coach K.  Thank you so much, this is such an honor”, said Charlotte O’Leary.

Her coach, Ed Koenigsfest, congratulated her for an outstanding season and commented that he’d coached Charlotte’s three older sisters saying, “It’s a great family, and Charlotte has certainly upheld the O’Leary name.  She’s done extremely well every single year, and I’m very excited about her upcoming senior year.”

O’Leary won the 2015 New Jersey State Championship in the 100-year breast stroke at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions on Sunday, March 1st.  A 16-year old junior who has been a member of the swim team for the last three years, she became the first MHS female swimmer to win a state championship since 1987 when she won last year’s title, a feat she repeated this year by recording a personal best time of 1:03.46.  For the third consecutive year, she was undefeated in the event in the State of New Jersey.

Again this year, O’Leary placed first in the 100-yard breast stroke at the Essex County Championships, when she set a new county record by breaking the record she set in 2014.  She also placed third in the 200-year individual medley, and was a member of Montclair High School’s 1stplace 200-yeard medley relay and 2ndplace 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

She has been a member of the Montclair YMCA Dolphins Club Swim Team for the last eight years, and is also a member of Montclair High School’s Yearbook Committee, Key Club and Art for a Cause Club.

She is the daughter of her proud parents, Jane and Kevin, and the sister of older sisters Kate, Maeve and Nora, all three of whom were members of the Montclair High School Swim Team as well.

Freeholder Vice President Brendan Gill is currently serving his first term as a Freeholder At-Large and his first year as the Board’s Vice President, having previously served one term as the District 5 Freeholder.  Freeholder Cynthia Toro began her first term as District 5 Freeholder in January, where she represents Belleville, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Montclair and Nutley.  She is the first Latina member of the Freeholder Board.
