“Today we welcome two groups of outstanding, state champion, student-athletes from Millburn High School”, said Freeholder Patricia Sebold.  “First, we have a group of old friend we’ve come to know so well in recent years, the Boys Tennis Team, and now a group of new friends making the first of what we hope will be many visits to our freeholder chambers, the Baseball Team!”

“Being invited down here to the Hall of Records with one team is very special”, said Millburn H. S. Athletic Director Dr. Theodore D’Alessio, “but accompanying two state championship teams, well, this day will always be remembered as something very, very special for me, and I will proudly hang both of these commendations from the Freeholder Board up on the wall in my office .  So once again, congratulations to both teams.”

The Boys Tennis Team won the 2015 Group 3 State Championship and then the 2015 Tournament of Champions, as it “4-peated” as State Champion, thereby retaining its title as the #1 boys high school tennis team in New Jersey.  In State Tournament play, the team first defeated Morristown H.S. (5-0), Belleville H.S. (5-0) and then Mendham H.S. (5-0) to win the North 2, Group 3 Sectional Championship on May 18, 2015, before going on to defeat Moorestown H.S. (5-0) and then Princeton H.S. (5-0) to capture the Group 3 State Championship on May 20th at Mercer County Park, thereby propelling the team into the Tournament of Champions (TOC).  The team then capped its stellar season by defeating Delbarton H.S. (5-0) in the 2015 TOC quarterfinals, Newark Academy (3-2) in the TOC semifinals and then Livingston H.S. (3-2) to capture the TOC title on Friday, May 28th.

The Millers finished their season with an amazing record of 24-5, continuing the program’s unparalleled record of success that has seen 30 consecutive Sectional Championships (40 overall), 7 consecutive Group Championships (24 overall), and the capturing of 4 consecutive Tournaments of Champions (8 overall).  The team is comprised of: Seniors Captain Jake Aronskind, Captain Jonathan Atwater, Captain Tyler Schick, Captain Alex Shedlin, Weill Besen and Alex Darvin; Juniors Jordan Beacham, Austin Jia and Darren Ting; Sophomores Jeremy Bader, Marco Mihajlovic and Charlie Shanker; and Freshmen Alex Jacobs, Mike Mirsky and Bryan Schick.  They were coached by Bill Wickenheisser and Lee Robinson.

“Gentlemen, we thought we’d run out of superlatives to describe the team’s accomplishments when you were here last year”, said Sebold, “so the only thing left to say this year is ‘Congratulations!’”

“I want to thank the freeholders for bringing recognition to our student athletes”, said Coach Bill Wickenheisser, who also thanked Athletic Director Dr. Ted D’Alessio, school administrators and Superintendent Dr. Christine Burton for all their support.  “I also want to congratulate my players for their amazing accomplishment of winning four straight Tournaments of Champions, as well as the baseball players and coaches for their great season.”

Senior Captain Tyler Schick, who was named to the 1st Team All-State, thanked the freeholders “for having us here today, it’s an honor to receive this award once again.”  He also added, “It’s been fun this year, my last year on the team, and I want to thank the coaches and my teammates for making this season truly memorable.”

“We’re proud to be here again”, said senior Captain Alex Shedlin, who also thanked Coach “Wick” and Coach Robinson and congratulated the baseball team.

Making the Board’s presentation to the Baseball Team, Freeholder Luciano said, “As the 4th Freeholder District’s representative on this Board, one of the towns I represent is the great Township of Millburn which season after season, year after year, produces sectional and state champions, usually in tennis, soccer and even fencing and cross-country.  But this afternoon, we are delighted to honor the newest state champions from Millburn High School, the 2015 Group 4 State Champion Baseball Team.”

“In the baseball program we often talk about being humble and appreciating your accomplishments, so it is certainly humbling to be in the same room with our tennis program and Coach Bill Wickenheisser”, said Baseball Head Coach Brian Chapman.   “To achieve at a high level is one thing, it’s great, but to sustain greatness and to sustain those championships year after year is something else, so we in the baseball program have a ton of respect for the tennis program.”

“I want to thank everyone for honoring us”, said senior Matt Abrams, speaking on behalf of his baseball teammates.  “This achievement was really incredible.  The fact that we made it here I don’t think anyone expected it of us, and to exceed everyone’s expectations is going to be something all of us will never forget.”

The Baseball Team won the 2015 New Jersey Group 4 State Championship on Saturday, June 6th, when it defeated Williamstown High School, 11-3, in Toms River, to win the first baseball state championship in school history.
In the state tournament, the Millers, first defeated Woodbridge H.S. (1-0), Columbia H.S. (10-2), Edison H.S. (10-0), and then Ridge H.S. (3-1) to win the North 2Group 4 Sectional Championship, before going on to defeat Randolph H.S. (4-0) in the Group 4 Semi-Finals before defeating Williamstown H.S. in the title game.

The team finished the season with an outstanding overall record of 26-6, ranked as the #8 team overall in New Jersey, the #2 public high school team in the state, and the #2 team in Essex County.  Earlier in the season, the team also reached the finals of the Greater Newark Tournament (GNT) for the second time in the last five years; finished second in the Super Essex Conference with a record of 14-2; and captured its third Sectional Championship in the last five years, the school’s 6th overall.

With a tip of his hat to the Baseball Team’s inside joke, Freeholder Luciano also make a tongue-in-cheek presentation of the Freeholder Board’s first-ever “High School Baseball MVP-P-P Award” to the team’s good luck charm, a piece of running track they’d named “TOD-D-D”.

S. alumnus Freeholder Leonard Luciano is currently serving his second full term representing District 4, which includes Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Essex Fells, Fairfield, Livingston, Millburn, North Caldwell, Roseland, Verona, West Caldwell and West Orange.
