“I have to admit, I had my doubts”, said Freeholder Wayne Richardson, referring to the team’s slow start through the middle of the season.  “But you pulled yourselves together, showed the championship material you’re made of, and rode an amazing string of victories to your 3-Peat State Championship.  Congratulations!”

Principal Oge Dennis talked with pride of putting his trust in the team, “because they hold me they ‘had this’… and in the end, they did!”  Vice Principal Carmen Morales congratulated the team and remarked how proud she was, as a Newark Tech alumna, to enjoy the excitement and pride again that she felt while she was a student at the school, and Head Coach Joe Jordan commended his team for “believing in yourselves, and each other”.

The Newark Tech Boys Basketball Team won the 2015 Group 2 State Championship when it defeated Camden High School, 57-51, at the Rutgers Athletic Center on March 12, 2015.  In State Tournament competition, the Terriers first defeated Harrison High School (74-58), Snyder High School (63-47), Lincoln High School (92-53), and then Newark Central High School (65-55) to win the North Jersey Section 2, Group 2 Sectional Championship for the third consecutive year.  The team then went on to defeat Manchester Regional High School (66-53) and then Camden High School to capture its third consecutive Group 2 State Championship, and fourth state championship in school history overall.  As State Champions, the team earned the right to compete in the prestigious Tournament of Champions, where it defeated Paterson Eastside High School (66-56) to reach the 2nd Round.

The team overcame a slow start to their 2014-15 campaign by coming together late in the season to play at their peak level of performance, never losing faith in their coach or each other to win the state championship and finish the season with a 16-14 record.

The team is comprised of the following members: Seniors Clark Webb, Jurod Page, Walker Wilson, Benjamin Sar and Adonis Ridley; Juniors Mustafa Lawrence, Tarae Merritt, Forest Miller and Isaiah Streeter; and Sophomores Walter Byrd and Jalah Wemusa.  It was coached by Head Coach Joe Jordan and Assistant Coaches Richard Woods and Rasheed Taylor, and the Team Managers were: Bobbi Johnson, Tyler Perry, Shaquayjah Proctor, Midori Koonce, Taryn Miller, Jada McNeill and Kandra Lakhan.

Freeholder Wayne Richardson was elected to his first term on the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders in November 2014, to represent District 2, which is comprised of Irvington, Maplewood and parts of Newark’s South and Central Wards.
