(Newark, NJ) – The Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored Herman Ingram of Newark for being inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame during its Wednesday, February 18, 2015, meeting at the Hall of Records.  District 2 Freeholder Wayne L. “I am so proud that the very first presentation I will make as a Freeholder is to a good friend and a good guy from Newark… Herm the Worm Ingram, who was recently inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame!”, said Freeholder Richardson.  He went on to say, “Herm grew up in Newark, attended the ‘school of hard knocks’, began boxing at the West Side Boys Club at the age of 14, and used his talent to become a Golden Gloves and Diamond Gloves champion, a professional boxer and the 1985 New Jersey State Featherweight champion.”  Richardson also commended Ingram for his more recent work as a trainer and mentor of Newark’s young people, helping to steer them on the right path and away from the unproductive “detours” he took during his own youth.  “Herm, you’ve earned your place in the Boxing Hall of Fame, but also in the hearts and minds of all of us here in the City of Newark; you’ve accomplished so much, and you’re doing your part to share not only your boxing skills with our young people, but also your wisdom… and in the long run, that may prove to be your greatest accomplishment of all.”

“I’d like to thank everyone here today, my brothers and sister, and especially you, Freeholder Richardson, because you’ve always been a great supporter of mine,” said Ingram, who added, “but I just wish my mother and father were here, too.”  Ingram added that he wants to give back to the youth, and that he will be working with his fellow fighters “… to help kids stay off the streets”.

Ingram was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame during the 4th Annual Induction & Award Ceremonies held on November 13, 2014, at the Venetian in Garfield.  He trained as a professional fighter out of Newark’s 8th Street Gym under the tutelage of Duker AC legend, the late Freddie Johnson.  His boxing career spanned many years, including winning the 1985 New Jersey State Featherweight title when he defeated Diego Rosario.  He also won both the Golden and Diamond Gloves championships at the young age of 17, when he was dominating his weight class.  Later in his career, he was a sparring partner for the late Hector “Macho” Camacho, Pernell Whitaker, Meldrick Taylor and Buddy McGirt, among others.

Freeholder Richardson was elected to his first term as District 2 Freeholder in November of 2014, and represents Irvington, Maplewood, and parts of Newark’s South and West Wards.
