Montclair High School alumnus and District 5 Freeholder Brendan Gill wore his Mountie Pride on his sleeve as he welcomed members of the two state champion teams to the Hall of Records saying, “One of the most enjoyable aspects of this position is that it gives me an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of people from the five towns I represent on this Board, and especially when those people are from my hometown of Montclair, as they are tonight.”  He went on to add, “On behalf of myself, a very proud Montclair High School alumnus, and the entire Freeholder Board, it is my pleasure to recognize these student-athletes who have accomplished so much and brought so much pride to their families, their school and the entire Montclair community.  Congratulations!”

The Montclair High School Girls Soccer Team won the school’s first-ever girls soccer state championship when it defeated Hunterdon Central H. In capturing its first state championship, only the third for a girls’ team in any sport at the high school, the Team completed its season with an outstanding overall record of 22-1, during which it outscored its opponents 64-14 and was also crowned Champion of both the Essex County Tournament and Super Essex Conference.

The Team was led by Head Coach Rob McOmish, who was also named New Jersey’s Girls Soccer “Coach of the Year” by NJ.com, and was comprised of the following players: Seniors - Christina Caruso, Lindsey Ewertsen, Kayla Jennings, Brittany Mack, Samantha Masur, Maggie Pacheco, Amanda Romano, Erin Silverman and Lucia Surraco; Juniors - Adrienne Barnes, Carly Cozzolino, Kelly Crawford, Ming Palling-Goetz, Isabel Kashi, Rachel Lansing, Cristina Renee Pliego, Kamili Rosenbaum and Nika Schnitzer; Sophomores - Sophie Foster-Palmer, Gabby Isola, Jillian Jennings and Alisa Wiggins; and Freshmen - Nora Giordano, Fiona Tubiana and Rebecca Van Siclen.  Coach McOmish was assisted by Chris Johnson, Meg Morris and Ashley Enste.

Athletic Director Jeff Gannon spoke about his pride in the team saying, “From one game to the next, a different player stepped up to carry the team forward, and it’s been a joy to be out there watching them as they represented themselves and their school so well.”

Soccer Coach Rob McOmish thanked Freeholder Gill for honoring the team and added, “This is a special group of girls who did it not only on the field, but in the classroom as well; they made school history, something that no other girls soccer team has ever done here, and they will remember it for the rest of their lives.”

The Montclair High School Football Team won its third consecutive North Jersey Section 1, Group 5 title when it defeated Passaic County Tech, 26-14, on Saturday, December 6th, at rain-soaked MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.  In state tournament competition leading up to the championship game, the Team first defeated Livingston (40-6) and Hackensack (24-7) high schools, and completed its “Three-peat” season with an outstanding record of 11-1, while also capturing its fourth consecutive Super Essex Conference American Division Championship.  This year’s state championship is the program’s seventh in the “modern era” of state tournament playoff games, and 25th overall.

The Team was comprised of the following members: Seniors - Amir Karim, Kevin Robinson, Anthony Cody, Jamil Best, Elijah Robinson, Parker McGowan, Oji Balija, Josh Allen, Alfred Lumpkin, Jr., Ian Leong, Khalil Moore, Patrick Spencer, Ben Schrieber, Chanse Riley, Jason Simon, Tyler Riley, Sam Crutchfield, Richard Christian, Joshua Harris, Shaquan Oliver, Taymar Walters, Ian Toder, Chris Mangrum, Marcell Brown, Jack Giordano, Krys Diaz, Mario Sokolic, Ben Crawley, Moises Rodriguez and Jeremiah Antoine; Juniors - Jason Campbell, Elijah J. Head Coach John Fiore was assisted by Jamie Bittner, Kevin Batty, Pete Ramiccio, Daniel Roberts, George Sanguiliano, Eugene Kline, Rae Oliver, Doug Moore, Vinny Pelli, Garland Thorton, Jeff Lawton, Robert Ferraro, Michael Maffucci, Anthony Maffucci, Michele Chemidlin, Sean Rothenburger and Mike Stoia.

“The truth is that I’ve run out of adjectives to describe our football team and this program, which has been around for so long and achieved so much, including three straight state championships and five straight appearances in the championship game”, said AD Gannon.  “But our recent teams under Coach Fiore, and especially this year’s team, have really shown that they understand the connection between success in the classroom and success on the football field.”

“Our success this year is a reflection on the character of our players”, said Coach Fiore, who explained that this year’s team had only six returning starters from last year’s undefeated state championship team after 33 players graduated.  “This title was extremely satisfying because a lot of people wrote us off, but the kids never fell into that trap and managed to reel off 11 straight victories after an opening-game loss.”
