ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS
HONOR THE MILLBURN H.S. STATE CHAMPION GIRLS TENNIS TEAM
NEW JERSEY’S #1 TEAM

(Newark, NJ) – During its Wednesday, December 3, 2014, meeting at the Hall of Records, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Millburn H. S. Girls Tennis Team for winning both the 2014 Group 3 State Championship and the Tournament of Champions.  The Board’s Commendation was sponsored and presented by Freeholder Vice President Patricia Sebold of Livingston and District 4 Freeholder Leonard Luciano of West Caldwell.  The players were accompanied by Coach Bill Wickenheisser and Athletic Director Dr. Ted D’Alessio.

Referring to the Team’s consistent success, Freeholder Sebold began the presentation by saying, “This has practically become an annual event here at the Hall of Records, one we pencil-in on our calendar of scheduled events each year, and that is a testament to the players, coaches and administrators at Millburn High School.”  Freeholder Luciano offered his congratulations to the players saying, “We marvel at your talent and work ethic, especially as you somehow manage to balance your athletic exploits with your academic workload.  You are a credit to yourselves, your families, school, the Township of Millburn and Essex County.”

The Millburn High School Girls Tennis Team won both the 2014 Group 3 State Championship and the Tournament of Champions to finish its spectacular season undefeated, 24-0, and ranked as the #1 girls tennis team in New Jersey.  In the state tournament, the Millers first defeated Warren Hills H. S. (5-0) and then Scotch

Plains-Fanwood H. S. (5-0), before defeating Chatham H. S. (5-0) to win the North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 State Sectional Championship, its ninth consecutive and 32nd overall sectional championship. 

The Team then beat Moorestown H. S. (5-0) before capturing the Group 3 State Championship with a 4-1 match victory over Princeton H. S. on October 17th, its ninth consecutive group state championship and 20th group title overall.  In the Tournament of Champions, the Team defeated second-seeded Holmdel H. S. (4-1) and then Newark Academy (5-0) to capture the TOC title for the second consecutive year.

In addition to winning its state championships, the Team also won the Essex County Tournament and the Super Essex Conference American Division Championship for the sixth consecutive year.  In the Essex County Tournament, sophomore Stephanie Schrage was crowned Essex County Singles Champion for the second consecutive year in addition to being the Runner-Up in the NJSIAA Singles Tournament and completing her season with a 26-1 record.  Senior Anya Zakusilo and sophomore Sydney Zirlin won the Essex County Doubles Championship while compiling a 22-2 record together this year.

The Team was comprised of the following members: Seniors - Captain Jane Bary, Captain Rebecca Blevins, Captain Ingrid Waung and Anna Zakusilo; Juniors - Elizabeth Gray, Anna Mandel and Paige Sollender; Sophomores- Stephanie Schrage, Isabella Waung and Sydney Zirlin,and Freshmen - Anna Brylin, Megan Chien, Sara Jacobs, Alex Pritsker and Macey Wardius.  They were coached by Bill Wickenheisser and Lee Robinson.
